May a husband beat his wife?

I am often asked what separates a Torah-based plural marriage from polygamy practiced by Muslims, Mormons, Asian tribes, etc. One of the differences will be outlined in this post. This video addresses the topic of abuse or battering a wife. While this is acceptable and even encouraged in some religions, the Torah has very clear instructions regarding this matter.

In the above video, a reporter from Sun News is discussing the Islamic views on marriage.  Apparently, marriage rules are quite different between the Koran and Scriptural Torah Plural Marriage.  A book on Islamic marriage sold out in bookstores - a book which advocates the beating of your wife and the correct techniques to perform the beating properly.  In the Torah, whether in single or plural marriage, a man is advised to love his wife and treat her as the weaker vessel.

It appears that the first video has been restricted by the owner, I am in the process of contacting him (30 Mar 12) and I will update the link once he replies.  The video was a beautifully portrayed expose of the actual commands concerning marriage in both the Torah and the Koran.  It's easy to see that they are diametrically opposed to one another.  I will get back to you soon to complete this post.
Until then, I invite you to join me for Shabbat and Moed services at http://www.yourarmstoisrael.org
and remind you to follow us and +1 us using the links on the right.  Walk with us as we explore Torah plural marriage together!

And I have finally secured a copy of the original video, courtesy of my good friend, Jamie C.

  1. Often I hear this argument from people against Polygamy. They often don't realize that torah keepers who enter into a multi-marriage covenant do so out of love. For muslims it's about hate because they teach their boys to hate girls from the time they can stand.

  2. Shalom Paul,
I tried to watch this video and it is marked private. I am interested in what it had to say...not sure if you are able to remedy this or not??
May you and yours have a delightful Shabbat!
